WA2S.org Documenting Oiled Wildlife in Michigan and the Gulf

World Animal Awareness Society - WA2S.org 
is now documenting in two unique locations with unfortunate similarities: oiled water and wildlife.

Marshall, Michigan -  Two rehabilitated soft-shell turtles will be released today into their new home at Binder Park Zoo.  The turtles were recovered by wildlife crews as part of the Kalamazoo River/Enbridge oil spill response and stabilized at a wildlife rehabilitation center in Marshall, Michigan.



Gulf Of Mexico - World Animal Awareness Society has been documenting in the Gulf since May and has had a team of 2 or more volunteers deployed since June.

July, 2010 - Gulf Coast, USA -- A heavily oiled bird clings to a boom. A dead dolphin washes ashore. Further out, rusty globs ooze toward a living shore... The images are bleak but familiar, in the oil polluted states surrounding the Gulf of Mexico. All this as the gusher has been quelled. The task now at hand? To resolve this cataclysmic event – and it's unimaginable.

Mr. Tom McPhee is currently in the Gulf as team leader of his second team of filmmakers, photojournalists, FEMA certified disaster responders, experienced animal rescuers, researchers, and concerned citizens in the "ALL EYES ON THE GULF" expedition to help chronicle this enormous disaster. The team is collecting visual data from ground and air levels. Team members also act as "spotters" of the affected wildlife and are assisting the Unified Area Command with locating the animals for their capture and care.

We have been communicating with various animal groups, marine biologists, scientists/researchers, government agencies, and universities who are assisting with our work and collaborating on our interactive map so that we can get ALL EYES ON THE GULF!

Follow Our Expedition In The Gulf

The WA2S.org All Eyes on the Gulf (AEOTG) expedition volunteer team members, led by Tom McPhee, have begun 2-days of intense wildlife documentation and spotter training in the Gulf of Mexico.  The World Animal Awareness Society and Kinship Circle have created a team that includes filmmakers, photojournalists, FEMA certified disaster responders, experienced animal rescuers, and concerned citizens.  Ady Gil has introduced two team members to the WA2S.org AEOTG Expedition; these members will allow WA2S.org access to the affected regions by boat or plane, as well as on land.  The initial team met on June 11, 2010 at 8AM at the Venice Marina.  Once training is completed, team members will be appointed designated areas along the coast to document the current conditions as they pertain to the wildlife in the region.  The team will collect visual data from ground and air levels.  Team members will also act as "spotters" of the affected wildlife and will be assisting the Unified Area Command with locating the animals for their capture and care.
