WA2S.org: ALL EYES ON THE GULF Expedition Continues

On April 20, 2010 the Gulf of Mexico was hit with an environmental disaster that much of the world has already forgotten.  World Animal Awareness Society in partnership with Kinship Circle volunteers spent months on the ground in the Gulf and we still have contributors in the regions providing content that we are sharing with the world - free of charge.  The ALL EYES ON THE GULF Expedition team embed with and interviewed governmental and non-governmental organizations, as well as individuals from the local communities.

Currently, we have numerous projects in production from micro-documentaries to a television program with the focus on this tragedy. As with all WA2S.org production, we document this data so that others may learn from these moments in time.  Please watch and share this blog and the videos herein and stay tuned to WA2S.org for a broadcast schedule of our upcoming productions.

Thank You,
Michelle Way

Follow Our Expedition In The Gulf

The WA2S.org All Eyes on the Gulf (AEOTG) expedition volunteer team members, led by Tom McPhee, have begun 2-days of intense wildlife documentation and spotter training in the Gulf of Mexico.  The World Animal Awareness Society and Kinship Circle have created a team that includes filmmakers, photojournalists, FEMA certified disaster responders, experienced animal rescuers, and concerned citizens.  Ady Gil has introduced two team members to the WA2S.org AEOTG Expedition; these members will allow WA2S.org access to the affected regions by boat or plane, as well as on land.  The initial team met on June 11, 2010 at 8AM at the Venice Marina.  Once training is completed, team members will be appointed designated areas along the coast to document the current conditions as they pertain to the wildlife in the region.  The team will collect visual data from ground and air levels.  Team members will also act as "spotters" of the affected wildlife and will be assisting the Unified Area Command with locating the animals for their capture and care.

The American Dog Magazine reports Why Am I Here?

A recent feature in The American Dog Magazine
reports on Documentary Filmmaker Tom McPhee
with the World Animal Awareness Society in Haiti after the devastating earthquake

    From the Summer 2010 issue:
Tom McPhee, founder and executive director of the World Animal Awareness Society (www.wa2s.org) traveled to earthquake-ravaged Port-au-Prince, Haiti, so he could document and film the rescue and assessment work being done by major international animal rescue organizations. Tom tells us, “I have a purpose, and I believe I'm supposed to be here filming the potentially important intersections between humans and animals during this time of crisis.” Tom met up with members of ARCH (Animal Rescue Coalition Haiti) and SODOPREC@ (the Dominican Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) and spent time filming the widespread devastation inflicted upon the people and animals in this crisis, which left hundreds of thousands of people and animals dead, injured, or homeless.

    A Letter From Our Founder

As Executive Director, I am nearing the end of the first round (seed capital round) of our foundational capital campaign for the World Animal Awareness Society (WA2S.org).  I have only a few days left in which to raise $10,000 and receive a “Triple Challenge Grant” that will turn that $10k into $30k.  This foundation grant is such an essential aspect to the goals of the Society that I truly need to ask your help to reach this goal - I am literally asking every person I know.  every little bit will help.

Please make your tax-deductible donation here so we can continue our important work.

As it applies to our mission, the WA2S.org is about to release three new documentaries: one on dog hoarding in Michigan, one on dog tethering in Macon Georgia, and a continuing expose on puppy mills filmed throughout the US.  The Society also quickly had great success in developing relationships at the highest levels of the leading animal organizations in the US and we are in discussions to have the WA2S serve in the role of official archivist for more than one major animal organization.  The WA2S.org has developed a template and infrastructure and on May 11, 2010 will be unveiling the High School based club called the “Visionaries Club” whose goal it is to have students film stories based on human-animal interactions in their own community and have them presented to the world as part of ongoing WA2S film festival relationships.

I understand many people may help other, more established organizations that also need support, but the WA2S is not an animal rescue organization.  The World Animal Awareness Society is a society of people interested in the continuing education of people.  The work we do will last for generations and generations!

The WA2S.org has been receiving exceptional support in the media, please click here to read about our latest exploits in Haiti in the NEW Summer 2010 issue of The American DOG magazine not yet released:  http://www.theamericandogmag.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=375%3Asummer-2010-in-this-issue&catid=60%3Atable-of-contents&Itemid=1

Thank you so much for your help.

    Hello Haiti

    February 1 thru 3, 2010

I try to have a purpose to everything I do and that's no different right at this moment, 9:47 am by the in-dash stereo of the Mistubishi Montero that I find myself riding shotgun in now. As the sun plays catch me with the mountains, we are nearly 3 hours out of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, on our way to earthquake ravaged, Port-au-Prince, Haiti. The we riding in this car with many miles on it is Daniel Polanco, who is driving and the brother of Marcos Polanco (VP of SODOPREC@ and the man I'm going to see), Flaco, Arturo and Juan, all with SODOPREC@, the Dominican Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and Karen Levy, a transplanted volunteer originally from Boston. We are traveling swiftly west by the deft, purposeful sort of driving by Daniel that I prefer and we are making good time through the lush, garbage-filled mountains on our way to the people, rubble and garbage filled streets of that 'place' I've been seeing for days on CNN…

Everything I had pushed forward over the last 10 days was about getting here -- getting to Haiti where the action is, getting to hook up with members of ARCH (Animal Rescue Coalition Haiti), getting to film the rescue and the assessment work being done by major animal rescue organizations in this monumentally devastated place. Laser focused, I have a purpose. As the Executive Director of the World Animal Awareness Society, I believe I am here to film the important interactions between humans and animals during this time of crisis.

A little more than 6 hours into the journey, as we drive through what I will describe as an ancient bazaar, gypsy-like portal to another world--alive with colorful people in motion everywhere--a severe sliver of a border town wedged between water, white lime and dust covered hills known as Mallepasse, Haiti, I further notice the barren, chalky, void of any trees, dusty landscape, and as the border guards waves us through, the thought invades my brain, "why am I here and what is my purpose?"

After meeting with Marcos Polanco at base camp, next to the busy and loud re-opened airport for what seems like only a fraction of a second, we find ourselves negotiating the newly reformed world of Part-au-Prince, down mad avenues and "fishing" for animal rescue business in some neighborhoods--neighborhoods instantly made from anything that will provide simple shelter following the jarring temblors that smashed this town to the ground and killed tens of thousands, where you can sometimes smell flesh when you pass a pile of rubble…

Tents are a luxury here, and so is animal rescue and assessment to some degree. I have been warned not to give anything of any value to anyone, even though in my possession are small sweet treats for exactly that purpose, due to the simple fact that I could die. Since stampedes and deadly misunderstandings have already occurred, I heed the warning.

Following a night of deceptively little sleep, I awoke to what appeared to be chicken pox--thousands of tiny red dots from forehead and ears, to ankles and underarms--delivered rigorously throughout the night by a small army of insects, mostly unheard and unfelt. I actually feel better now than when I drifted off to sleep the night before and only after I ingest cornmeal mixed with water in a plastic cup for breakfast, did I really know that I was ready to meet the day.

This was the day that a few households on a couple of tiny streets, in a small neighborhood, on a hill overlooking the choked and crushed city, with a population density nearly 8 times greater than London, had its first rescuers come to the aid of the people, who now lived outside in fear of their crippled houses and yet another aftershock. It did not matter in the least to these fine folks that the help was for their pets--they were so glad to have any help--that as soon as the ARCH team set up a portable triage station and the vet work started, our new neighbors began to stream in with their pets, primarily dogs and cats. Dogs and cats that could have used the assistance of ARCH prior to the earthquake.

I felt my purpose resolve at that moment.

The next issue of the "American Dog Magazine" will feature a text & pictorial story of my trip to Haiti, a story that will include the images for which these next sentences were written: The following images are the culmination of this day. I hope they move you as they have moved me. They have given me purpose and meaning and underscore the reason for being in Haiti in the first place.

    Don't Have A Cow!?

To Eat Meat OR Not To Eat Meat?

In food terms, meat is a non-human animal raised and prepared for human consumption.  These animals may include sheep, cattle, pigs, chickens, buffalo, crocodile, or horses.  In some cases fish are also included as a meat. Humans who do not consume meat are considered vegetarians.  Vegetarians follow a plant-based diet and sometimes limit dairy or egg intake.

    Caution! Animals Ahead!

Many animals have been stereotyped by humans, but are these stereotypes based on fact or fiction?

A Stereotype is a simple, standardized image to characterize something held common by members of a group.  Many stereotypes are based on real life experiences, while others are creations of our imagination due to images in visual media, publications, or urban legends.  Many of these stereotypes are misunderstood and evolve over time.

    Talking Points:
    • Breed Specific Legislation
    • Breed Specific Activism
    • Childhood Stories
    • Shelter Animals
    • Man-Eaters

    The Animal Athlete!

Many Animals Are involved in Sporting Events...

The animal athlete, in a sense, is a type of working animal.  Many types of sports include human and animal participation in varying degrees.  A few of the sports include: rodeos, dogsledding, horse racing, greyhound racing, agility competitions, elephant polo, dog-fighting, pigeon racing, bear baiting, camel wrestling, hunting, fishing, obedience trials, show jumping, and dressage.

    Talking Points:
    • Olympic Games
    • Highly Trained Animals
    • Natural vs Unnatural Activities
    • Overworked
    • Profit
    • Animal Achievments
    • Education
    • Satisfaction Gained
    • Death
    • Animals in Peak Condition

Do you think the animal athlete is well-trained competitor or are humans exploiting these creatures?  Are these legitimate sports or should they be illegal?  WA2S.org wants to know what you think?  Are these topics something that we should focus a lens upon in the coming year?

    Homeward bound: Pet adoptions rise

This is a story that the WA2S will continue to film in 2010.

Pluto is a 1-year-old, white and brown basset hound who has been living at the Humane Society of Greater Miami for the past six months.

He's been adopted twice since his original owner surrendered him. But he keeps coming back to the shelter.

"I don't understand why people keep giving him back," said Jorge Leon, a supervisor at the shelter in North Miami Beach. "He's the sweetest dog."

Flu Season: Factory Farming Could Cause A Catastrophic Pandemic

This is an example of a story thread the WA2S will film.
An Interview with Dr. Michael Greger
I was intrigued (and disturbed) by a book I just read online -- www.BirdFluBook.org -- by Michael Greger, M.D. about the potential of a deadly flu pandemic, the likes of which we have never seen. Greger very clearly delineates how a virus begins, mutates, and becomes dangerous. As with so many problems we are seeing lately -- environmental or health -- factory farmed meat seems to be a big part of the cause.

Pickens' wife calling attention to plight of wild horses

This is an example of the type of story thread WA2S will film.

FORT WORTH — Amid the hundreds of horses taking part in the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo’s All Western Parade, Madeleine Pickens was trying to draw attention to the plight of wild horses thousands of miles away.  See the whole story when you click here

    USDA Shuts Down Puppy Mill

The following story is an example of a thread WA2S will film.

More than a year after exposing shocking and unhealthy conditions inside a Minnesota puppy mill, the federal government is finally shutting it down. Click here to read the rest of the story
